Abstract
Loop systems have proven to provide a solid data communication basis for modern train control systems requiring a track/train system with a considerable data volume. A data communication system based on loops has also been adopted as one of three data communication systems for the European Train Control System (ETCS) (the others are EUROBALISE and EURORADIO). The ETCS specifications distinguish between a continuous EUROLOOP transmission system (referred to as CETS) and a spot/medium length EUROLOOP system which is described. The paper describes general features of loop systems, the requirements for the EUROLOOP data communication sub-system and the present state of the system implementation
