Low-cost operation of secondary lines: the Italian situation

This paper deals with the technological solutions currently adopted in Italy in order to achieve the low-cost operation of secondary electric railway lines. The connection between automation level and operating cost is investigated and the importance of other factors, such as simplification of fixed installations and special rolling stock, is also discussed
