Abstract :
The first half of the paper presents the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the Extensible Markup Language (XML). It describes some of the key types of UML diagrams defined for the description of static structures of complex systems and the dynamic behavior between the different objects in the system, as well as the structure and components of an XML files. The second part of the paper discusses the use of UML diagrams and XML files in the definition of the object models in IEC 61850 and the Substation Configuration Language defined in Part 6 of the standard.
