Abstract
We have shown that strong beam coupling can occur in erbium doped fibre and that the contribution from the gain grating, or the imaginary component of the nonlinear refractive index, is much larger than the phase grating contribution. From the measured signal when a fast phase modulation is applied we can conveniently measure the response time of the real-time index grating amplified signal beams
