Abstract :
We propose a novel simple unequal FEC scheme to reduce ECC overhead in digital video transmission. In this scheme we initially derive equations for estimating ECC overhead for both equal and unequal error protection, study the packet loss rate for I, P, B and audio frames individually for diverse channel conditions, then devise a novel variable FEC scheme to reduce ECC overhead in digital video transmission. The simulation results show our proposed scheme can estimate the FEC overhead involved in different FEC schemes and control the extra ECC overhead involved in digital video transmission with minimal impact on the quality of video at the receiver. Also our proposed scheme is fairly simple to implement and hence reduces the computational overhead.
