Abstract :
The history of automotive technology contains many cases in which a new technology completely replaces its predecessor. The universal use of diode-rectified alternators in place of brush-commutated generators is one example. The conditions under which such a revolution may occur will be considered. A number of prospective new automotive technologies, all involving the use of electromagnetic and/or power electronic systems, will be examined for their potential to become a universal technology
