Abstract :
Formulas are obtained for the impedance and quality factor of planar printed inductors on a multilayer medium. These formulas account for all the geometrical, electrical and magnetic parameters of the multilayer medium. Numerical examples are given to show the effect of a lossy magnetic layer on the inductor parameters. It is seen that the magnetic permeability can enhance the inductance and the quality factor, but the magnetic loss can counteract these effects at sufficiently high frequencies if it exceeds a certain limit.
