Abstract :
The demand for new communication technologies, communication channels and communication media increases as a large and heterogeneous community of Internet users expects a wide choice of communication means. This trend has stimulated the launch of a large number of novel video streaming web-applications. However, the processing of video/audio files is either tied to applications that need to be installed on a computer´s hard-drive, or to remote applications that are not entirely under the user´s control. The concept of browser-based media recording is not new, since many social network platforms (e.g., Face book or Twitter) have already integrated such a service into their online strategy. Nevertheless, these services are closely tied to their providers and the provider´s policies on data storage and copyright. For this reason, Memoxo has been realized as a prototype of a browser-based media-recording web application to create and use audio/video files online without being tied to some provider´s policies on data storage and copyright. We developed Memoxo as a free web application that allows users to record, send or publish audio/video messages directly from their browsers. We have built Memoxo into the Red5 media server, which satisfies the Web Accessibility Standards and likely to provide alternative means of communication for people with disabilities. In this paper, we address Memoxo´s usage as well as its technical aspects and application scenarios.
