Abstract :
In this paper, the performance of energy efficiency of cluster-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is investigated. We consider the effect of cluster head (CH) and relaying nodes (RN) selection on the energy consumption in WSNs. With the fixed clustering algorithms (FCA), we propose energy efficient minimum mean distance (EEMMD) algorithm and energy efficient relay and minimum distance (EERMD) algorithm to improve the energy efficiency for WSNs. Simulation results show that the EEMMD can slightly improve the energy efficiency. However, the proposed EERMD can largely improve both the energy efficiency and lifetime of WSNs. Moreover, to prolong the lifetime of 1% nodes death (ND), we investigated the energy saving (ES) for different number of clusters. Simulation results show that with 4 clusters and the distance between base station and the sensing field only 10m, the proposed EERMD obtains the longest lifetime of 1% ND with more 60% than FCA and EEMMD schemes.
