Abstract :
This paper describes a method for identification of system instability and contingency ranking. A quadratic equation of a power network is obtained. The value of B2-4AC of this equation is calculated for each outage. Based on this value the information about whether the system is stable or unstable, is obtained. The distance of operating point of the system from the point where the system becomes unstable, is measured. An increment in this value will show that the system is going towards instability. Having the knowledge about the stability of the system, advanced steps can be taken to prevent the instability situation, before the system becomes too unstable. This method is tested on standard IEEE test systems
