Abstract
Summary form only given. Stagnated wire array Z-pinches are studied with localized spectroscopic dopants in the 1 MA Zebra and 20 MA Z pulsed power facilities. Coatings on wire arrays have previously been used to diagnose plasma parameters through K-shell spectroscopy. Here, axial particle transport in Al wire arrays is observed by spatially-resolved spectroscopy of Na K-shell lines from localized dopant tracers. Thin (5% of the wire mass/length) NaF bands of 1 mm axial extent are observed to spread out over several millimeters due to convection or microturbulence. These observations may quantify and constrain proposed instability mechanisms which may impact plasma heating rates and X-ray production in dense Z-pinches. Spectroscopic modeling including detailed atomic physics is used with Zebra experimental data to infer similar densities and temperatures from K-shell line intensities of Na and a 5% volumetric Mg wire dopant. Recent experiments on both facilities also address the use of low-Z coatings to diagnose density and temperature in a high-Z tungsten pinch through K-shell dopant spectroscopy. Localized dopants are also used to track material flow in conical wire array implosions
