Abstract :
Wind energy is the most exploited renewable energy source due to its wide availability. Wind energy conversion systems normally are remotely situated and often are connected to micro grids which can either operate in grid connected mode or islanding mode. Sudden load increases in a micro grid system causes severe voltage dips which affect greatly affects the performance of the Wind energy conversion system (WECS). In this paper a grid connected WECS is modeled and simulated under severe voltage sags caused due to load variations. Then a STATCOM is modeled and connected to the system to improve the Voltage profile of the Micro grid system as well as to improve the performance of the WECS during voltage sag. The WECS is modeled in synchronously rotating reference frame. Two vector control strategies are implemented for the control of the WECS. The performance of the WECS is simulated and analyzed with and without STATCOM, and the results are presented. The simulation is done in Matlab/Simulink platform.
