Abstract :
The main difficulty when trying to eliminate impulsive noise (IN) from communication channels is to distinguish it from the transmitted signal. Although IN events vary in nature and in bandwidth, most of them are wideband. Here, we present a novel method for detecting IN, by taking advantage of the fact that its bandwidth is usually wider than that of typical communication channels. Two variants are proposed: the first one demodulates the IN within a wide bandwidth containing the communication channel; the second one demodulates the IN within an idle channel next to the communication channel. In addition, a specific application for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing reception is presented, along with a performance analysis.
