Abstract :
A compact low-cost planar antenna is proposed to cover the WLAN frequency bands centered at 2.4, 5.2 and 5.8 GHz. It was observed that the resonant frequencies of the antenna can be easily adjusted. The return loss in the 5.2 to 5.8 GHz range is effectively controlled by using a strip to short out the surface current. The antenna shows a donut-shaped radiation pattern in the E-plane and an omnidirectional radiation pattern in the H-plane for both lower and upper WLAN frequency bands. Inserting an additional radiating element into the antenna geometry allows the antenna to operate in the WiMAX frequency band at 3.5 GHz, as well as the WLAN frequency bands. The housing effect of devices in the vicinity of antenna is also investigated, and it is observed that the orientation of the antenna to a nearby box is critical in maintaining the performance of the antenna.
