Abstract
This paper provides a new decision-making method for identifying core industries during the regional planning process of an integration economy function area. First, industrial clustering theory is used to understand the planned region within its larger geographic context. Second, a method of ranking the industries in the surrounding area is established and principle component analysis is used to confirm the core industries. Last, selection of the core industries for the planned region can be made in the context of its surrounding industries, planning requirements and its own competitive advantages. This is provides a convenient, specific and operative method in regional planning and also a quantitative and visual decision-making basis. At the same time, a new viewpoint from industrial clustering theory is provided for the theoretical research of regional planning.
