Abstract
Upcoming applications like VoIP or multimedia telephony in cellular networks require support of quality of service (QoS) in the radio access network (RAN). Cellular network providers who want to offer QoS based services have to plan their network capacity according to user demands. Therefore, the integration of a traffic simulator into the dimensioning tools becomes one of the most important aspects for the QoS support during the network dimensioning process. This article describes a generalized solution for packet traffic simulation (TSim) in cellular networks, which is carried out looking forward the interoperability that fourth generation (4G) wireless network promises to offer. The traffic simulator is performed and tested for EDGE and WiMAX systems. In addition, TSim extensions for UMTS and HSDPA are discussed. TSim simulates the overall traffic in a cell with the scope to evaluate the individual traffic flow QoS performance within a given RAN hardware capacity.
