Abstract
In this paper we investigate the potential performance of radar systems employing sparse arrays. Different sparse array geometries are evaluated with respect to detection and estimation performance, with particular attention paid to the effect of near-ambiguities on system performance. The results show that sparse arrays have several advantages over a fully populated array, but that the near-ambiguities deteriorate performance when sidelobe interference is present.
