Abstract
When formulating a problem in mathematical language so as to submit it to an optimization process, different formulations of the problem often lead to different performances of the optimization. Using the example of the design of the simple electromagnetic circuit of a brushless permanent magnet machine, we illustrate how different algebraic manipulations can beneficially influence the optimization process. In the analysis, we apply five different local deterministic solvers to distinguish between results that are particular for a give solver and more generic findings for a different class of solvers.
