Abstract
This paper examines atomic equivalents to macroscopic electric and magnetic dipoles, an approach which promises not only to allow studies in the quantum optics realm, as discussed recently in a few multi-level schemes, but also a method to possibly fill arbitrary volumetric spaces in properly prepared solid state systems employing quantum dots, heterostructures, or nanocrystals.
