Abstract
A new number system, reduced biquaternions (RBs), is introduced. They are related to the quaternions and biquaternions proposed by W.R. Hamilton (1969). It is shown that a further reduction of systems degree will occur if RBs are used. An example shows the realization of a fourth-order real filter by means of a first-order RB filter. With the introduction of the RBs a new method is obtained for the design of wave digital Hilbert transformers
