Abstract :
The residual gas pressure within 30 m of the interaction point (IF) at the e± collider CESR is maintained in the low nanotorr range, despite the high gas loads produced by the intense flux of synchrotron radiation, in order to minimize the experimental backgrounds due to beam gas scattering. Within 12 m of the IP, the vacuum chambers incorporate large pumping plenums with massive titanium sublimation pumping to provide the necessary pumping speed and capacity. Operating experience over the last two years has shown that this method of pumping is efficient and inexpensive
