Abstract
Non ceramic materials had been in use as insulators for over 60 years; however, only in the 80´s they were commercially competitive. In that time, the first overhead line was installed in Mexico using non ceramic insulators but failed before commissioning due to a lack of mechanical, and UV resistance from the polymeric material. Since then non-ceramic materials were banned from outdoor applications in Mexico.
