Abstract
We investigate asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks with self-similar traffic. We propose upper bound formulas of the cell loss ratio, which is one of the most important quality-of-service measures in ATM networks. The existing formulas are extended to apply in the situation where an ATM multiplexer in a switch is managed by the local traffic information. By using a trace-driven simulator, we show that the proposed upper bound formulas for the cell loss ratio are applicable to self-similar traffic and can be a practical solution for the control and dimensioning of ATM networks. Numerical results also show the impacts of cell assembly and shaping on self-similarity when the source traffic is self-similar
