Abstract
We propose an application layer algorithm for dynamic adaptation of number of medium access control (MAC) layer re-transmissions based on a deadline aware client feedback. The proposed approach is mainly designed for audio, video streaming on IEEE 802.11b wireless networks. The proposed approach allows a server side to set its number of MAC layer re-transmissions based on the client application needs. The proposed algorithm can result in a lower number of "effectively\´\´ lost packets. This includes the packets actually lost (never received by the receiver) and the late packets. The proposed approach caters to applications with different latency requirements. Thus the proposed approach can be used for one-way and/or two-way streaming media.
