Abstract :
The solar power satellite is a concept for collecting solar energy in orbit and transmitting it by microwaves to a collector on the ground. The transmitting array on the satellite must be focused by adjusting the phases of the many sub-arrays. In one method, each sub-array is phase modulated and the resulting amplitude modulation at the ground is used to correct its phase. This paper studies the signal-to-noise ratio in this process and shows how to achieve adequate accuracy
