Abstract :
Different ways to achieve grey shades with ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) in the SmC/sup */ phase are discussed, and a solution that allows the realization of complex (256*320) TV displays is presented. The approach shows that FLC technology, used in a way which takes advantage of its speed and bistability, could be a leading candidate for the realization of large and complex TV displays. Contrast is still poorer than with older technologies, but this problem will be solved when large-cone-angle FLC mixtures become available.<>
