  • Abstract
An efficient database management systems (DBMS) developed for a three-dimensional photo-based image generator. The technique eliminates some of the problems which have restricted the performance of these systems for real-time presentation on raster displays. The DBMS uses two general principles to simplify the processing of digitally stored video images. Rather than storing a contiguous picture or sections of a picture, the technique stores a digitized photograph as a series of interlaced cells called I-cells. Each I-cell contains pixel information which is interlaced in both the horizontal and vertical directions. A virtual memory is used to allow selective updating of picture information. The bandwidth required to process a picture as resolution requirements change is significantly reduced. The technique permits high-resolution target areas to be surrounded with equally rich generic terrain; false cuing of pilots or operators toward resolution-rich target areas is minimized. The technique is suited for quick turnaround mission rehearsal using reconnaissance photography, single and multichannel simulator displays, and smart bomb or remotely piloted vehicle simulations
