Abstract :
An efficient hardware module for an adaptive modeling unit of a multi-symbol multiplication-free arithmetic coder is presented. By adopting the Fenwick (1994) data structure, our model can access, store, and update the cumulative frequencies with fewer memory accesses, despite a much simpler architecture compared to existing architectures of Witten, Neal and Cleary (1987) and of Peon, Osorio and Bruguera (see EUROMICRO 1997, New Frontiers of Information Technology, Proceedings of the 23rd EUROIMICRO Conference). The original multiplication-free algorithm has been revised to fit hardware implementation
