Abstract
A variety of emergency controls for the prevention of cascading blackouts are generator tripping, fast valving, load shedding, excitation controls and controlled islanding. Controlled power system islanding operation is one of the effective actions made by operator at the dispatch center. Through the centralized control scheme, the operator should decide which transmission lines to be opened to split original network into islands. This paper proposes principle areas for islanding operation based on distribution factor matrix (DFM). DFM was created from the relationship between the generators and loads. The optimal system configuration was then chosen from those candidates to fulfill operational objectives and minimize the number of cutsets. Operational constraints related to power imbalance and line capacity limits should be achieved. Simulation result on IEEE 118-bus test system shows that principle areas concept is more effective for islanding operation because of easy monitoring and implementation.
