  • Abstract
Catastrophe theory is applied to research on electric contacts. The cusp model of direction reverse of material transfer is constructed and the mechanism of direction reverse is analyzed. Two kinds of direction reverse, continuous and discontinuous direction reverse, are presented. The butterfly model of arc transmission from a metallic to a gaseous phase is discussed. The effects of circuit voltage, current, load inductance, and gap length on the arc transition are discussed. The characteristics of arc transition from metallic to a gaseous phase are obtained. A novel state of an arc, i.e. a compromise phase, is presented
