Abstract
The method described by M. R. Schroeder et al. (1967) is used to halve the bandwidth of a speech signal. This could result in a doubling of the information carrying capacity of, for example, an SSB radio channel or an increase of 3 dB in the received signal to noise ratio. It is shown that it is possible to realize a "rooting" system using practical linear phase FIR filters with only 20 dB stopband attenuation. The 3 dB gain in output SNR is clearly demonstrated. The subjective SNR may be more than 3 dB due to the "noise shaping" effect of the system
