Abstract :
A test system for use as a screen of potential lubricants in rotating precious metals electrical contrasts is developed. This system measures the electrical noise, wear, and coefficient of friction. The fixture has a reciprocating arm with mounted strain gauges to measure the frictional forces. The arm is used to hold a slider which is used as the sliding contact over a fixed test coupon. The test fixture and technique allowed for a quick, cost-effective screening method to access the behaviour of a sliding contact in the presence of the bulk lubricant. The coefficient of friction and the sliding contact resistance (noise) are used as criteria for initial screen selection. The wear scar measurement is also made. As a result of this testing program, 10 fluids are selected from over 100 possible candidates for further life testing with actual rotating components
