Abstract :
A project whose aim was to prove the viability of producing a low-cost wind-driven generator locally is described. The cost of importing wind-driven generators suitable for South African conditions was the prime mover behind this project. After the selection of an electric power source and with the wind turbine design finalized, a gear box to match the power versus speed characteristics was built. The entire design concept aimed at simplicity, reliability, and low cost in order to meet the demands of the low-income groups in off-the-grid areas. It is concluded that a low-cost wind-driven generator can be developed and produced in South Africa to suit local conditions
