Abstract :
Eskom´s experiences in the application and implementation of RAPS projects have highlighted a number of issues. RAPS technologies work, and are capable of satisfying a multitude of customers´ energy needs. The high capital cost of RAPS systems, in return for what is perceived to be a limited power supply, is still the greatest obstacle preventing wider utilization of these technologies. Inadequate communication with the customer in terms of understanding his energy needs, system limitations, and basic energy management has lead to disillusionment among many existing RAPS customers. This has damaged the image of both the RAPS industry and the associated technologies. A necessary component of any RAPS programme is customer education and a reliable maintenance and backup service infrastructure
