Abstract :
Passive periodic arrays of metallic patches have been used over the past few decades as frequency selective surfaces (FSS) due to their filtering properties for normal or oblique incident waves. In this paper, a study of the resonance phenomena that occur on an FSS in free face and in close proximity to a ground plane is presented. Some important differences due to the ground place are highlighted in conjunction with the artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) and electromagnetic band gap characteristics of the combined FSS-ground plane structure. The different underlying physical mechanisms that produce the two effects are discussed. A technique to tailor the relative spectral properties of the two effects is hence proposed
