Abstract
It is noted that the promotion of careers in technology is difficult in South Africa. Good formal education in necessary for development. The crisis in formal education has resulted in the development of nonformal education which has been the vehicle for nongovernment involvement in education. Technology promotion has been via nonformal education. PROTEC, a privately funded nonformal program which is a good example of how technology and technological careers can be successfully promoted is discussed
