Abstract :
The Highways Agency is committed to improving the efficiency of the existing road network and to sharing the roads investment risks with the private sector. The paper describes how the Highways Agency´s National Motorway Communications System (NMCS2) can make a contribution to achieving these goals by way of its open system architecture. NMCS2 comprises an hierarchial structure of local and wide area communication networks. Within the control centre there area number of terminals known as operator interfaces (OIF). One OIF is provided for each operator and they form the focal point for the various network and traffic control facilities in the area
