Abstract :
AMEC Process and Energy Limited (APEL), a primary operating subsidiary of AMEC p.l.c., one of Europe´s largest engineering, construction and development contractors, undertakes onshore and offshore contracting within the international process plant and energy sector. The company recognises that the uncertain business environment in which it operates necessitates both innovation and a proactive approach to the management of risk. As a result APEL has initiated the Total Risk Management (TRM) project, which has been conceived to generate both behavioural and procedural changes in the way it executes its business. A phased approach has been adopted for the TRM project, aiming to introduce the required changes over a two year period. Early phases have included assessment of the existing risk management capability of APEL and identification of required changes to strengthen and improve risk management processes. The project has undertaken training needs analysis, development of processes, tools and techniques, and project roll-out across the APEL organisation. In order to assist the implementation of the TRM project, APEL has benchmarked its approach to risk management against current best practice, and has designed a three level training package to provide awareness, understanding and skills to the entire organisation, from directors to project teams
