Abstract :
The identification of critical clusters and vulnerable segments is of primary importance in the transient stability assessment. In this paper, the line potential energy method is used to derive a transient stability index which in turn is used for the identification of critical clusters of machines and the vulnerable segments of the network. Since only the post-fault trajectory is required, the proposed method is independent of system modeling and could be extended for multi-swing stability assessment. Case studies on the IEEE 17-generators and UK 20-generators systems validated that the proposed method is practical and effective
