Abstract :
As the PJM footprint has expanded and the operations have grown, the volume of information received by PJM operators has increased significantly, and will likely continue to do so. This creates a situation where the operator can be overwhelmed by excessive information, making it difficult to identify, prioritize, and react to critical issues. This has the potential to impact reliability. If an operator cannot process all the information he/she receives, it is possible that key information may be lost, and faulty decisions could be made based on incomplete information. Additionally, the operator´s ability to quickly take action on that information is heavily weighted on his or her experience level. If unfamiliar situations are encountered and the operator is required to consult more than 200 pages of operating procedures that define proper actions to take given certain criteria, response time to the event may be significantly increased. Again, this may have negative consequences to reliability. PJM has developed or is developing the following intelligent systems for the real time system operations
