Abstract
Summary form only given. An overview of the neutron detection technique used in the fission industry was presented, and changes necessary for the detection of fusion-produced neutrons were discussed. Neutron detection techniques developed for fusion experiments were reviewed. Alpha particles produced in a fusion ignition experiment can be divided into two general classes-confined alphas and escaping alphas. Each of these two classes of particles can give different information about the ignited plasma. Existing techniques for detection of escaping alpha particles and proposed methods for measuring confined alphas were described. The instruments for making these alpha and neutron measurements and the advantages and disadvantages of each were discussed. The capabilities and limitations of each type of instrument were presented, the appropriateness to a fusion ignition experiment and cost and availability were discussed, and the proposed alpha and neutron diagnostic systems for IGNITEX were presented
