Abstract :
The authors discuss the effects of lightning on MV power lines and give empirical formulae for calculating the number of lightning-induced surges. The effects of lightning on aerial bundle conductors are discussed, and some of the first results of a study of this subject are given. The options for insulation designs are discussed, and proposals for practical 300 kV BIL (basic insulation level) structures that have been used by Eskom are considered. Data on the field performance of different designs are presented
