Abstract
Summary form only given. Amplifiers based on the relativistic klystron amplifier (RKA) mechanism are described in which the interaction between an intense relativistic electron beam (IREB) and a low-power external RF pulse results in the generation of coherent and phase stabilities. Parametric studies were performed on fully modulating annular IREBs with diameters of up to 13 cm, currents of 1-30 kA, voltages of 0.2-3.0 MV, durations of 10-300 ns, and diode impedances of 20-200 Ω. In a recent experiment a 13.2-cm-diameter annular IREB with a DC power of 8 GW and an impedance of 30 Ω was modulated by an external magnetron operating at 1.3 GHz and 0.5 MW power. The interaction of this modulated beam with an output structure generated a 3-GW RF pulse radiated into the atmosphere. A compact high-gradient accelerator powered by RKA has been built. Electrons were accelerated to 60 MeV in a 1-m-long structure, with a peak current of 200 A
