  • Abstract
A novel adaptive block interleaving algorithm is designed and applied to OFDM sub-carriers of a Very High Data Rate Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) operating at 60 GHz. The OFDM system arises from UWB-OFDM WPAN studies carried out within the phase 1 of the IST-FP6 MAGNET project. The algorithm utilizes modulo operations and a turbo-based structure to optimize the frequency interleaving spreading over multipath channels. The algorithm undertakes a dynamic set-up to Actively introduce a time-frequency diversity of the channel on the system. The dynamic implementation uses the turbo structure of the algorithm to generate N different permutation rules successively applied to N OFDM symbols. The algorithm is tested and compared to Relative Prime and random interleavers upon 16-QAM and QPSK modulated sub-carriers. In a static configuration where a single permutation rule is considered, the algorithm reveals gains near 1 dB facing to a RP interleaver. The dynamic set-up strengthens gains to 2-4 dB. This work highlights benefits of a dynamic and scalable interleaving processing to enhance short distance WPAN link level performance under a low cost implementation.
