Abstract :
This presentation will look at recent advances in microwaves - both hardware and software - which can potentially transform current methods used in detecting and treating breast cancer tumors. The author started in this field almost thirty years ago at which time the microwave technology still had not reached fruition. Current techniques in phased arrays, ultra-wideband beamforming and space time adaptive processing used in radar and communication applications are now being evaluated for medical applications. In this paper, we will review several ideas from [1] including polarimetric techniques and spectral resonances which might further advance the field both for detection and hyperthermic treatment of the tumor and see how they are being used today as described in the literature. It is emphasized that the spectral resonances speculated in [1] and now confirmed in the literature may be a critical aid to hypertherma.
