Abstract :
Summary form only given. The authors propose a method of two cross beams with parallel polarization for establishing an initial value problem for up-conversion of a microwave pulse in a rapidly growing plasma. With this approach, it is possible to adjust the intensity of each beam so that a discharge of background gas occurs only in the intersection region of the two beams. The experiment was performed by injecting two 1.1-μs microwave pulses (3.27 GHz) into a chamber from two adjacent sides of the chamber walls. These two pulses intersected inside the chamber and caused quick ionization of the background gas in the regions of constructive interference of the wave fields. The frequency of the output pulses was upshifted: a clear frequency upshift exceeding 1.5 MHz was demonstrated
