Abstract :
The authors have studied the optoelectrical characteristics of twisted-nematic liquid crystal (TN-LC) in detail to optimize the image quality of active-matrix liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). They have found that a specific cell condition, Delta nd=1.3-1.4, provides the highest contrast ratio. They call this TN-LC condition the CEM (contrast enhanced mode). Experimental results on contrast ratio, gray-scale capability, and response are discussed. The application of CEM to a poly-Si TFT LCD is described. The results indicate that the CEM will lead to a great improvement of image quality in TFT and MIM-LCDs and support the spread of active-matrix LCDs.<>
