Abstract :
A microwave-photonic ultra-wideband (UWB) noise radar system is proposed and demonstrated. The UWB noise waveform is generated using the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) that is associated with stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a standard optical fiber. Careful modulation of the SBS pump wave broadens the spectrum of the inherently narrow SBS-ASE to 1 GHz width. Ranging measurements with 20 cm resolution are demonstrated.
