Abstract
Recently, it has been shown theoretically that loading of a thin-wire-based ENG metamaterial with uniformly distributed inductances lowers the plasma frequency. Application of this concept for shrinking dimensions of the unit cell of ENG metamaterial is investigated in this paper. Several experimental 1D and 2D metamaterials were manufactured using coil-like structures and tested in the waveguide environment. It was found possible to manufacture 1D ENG material unit cell of which spans less than lambda/30. However, measurements of 2D ENG metamaterial showed unexpected resonant behavior
