Abstract :
This paper presents the philosophy and field results of beta tests of an adaptive system for controlling distribution voltages and VAr flows. This system includes adaptive pole-top capacitor bank controls (ACCs), an adaptive transformer LTC voltage control (ATC) and an adaptive line regulator control (ARC). This adaptive system consists of these distributed intelligent devices, independent of outside communication, to accomplish the timely switching of available distribution pole-top capacitor banks and distribution substation capacitor banks. This timely switching reduces distribution losses and increases equipment loading by reducing currents and reducing voltage variations in the lines and the transformers. These reduced voltage variations create a more desirable distribution system voltage profile while reducing the number of required tap changes on regulators and transformers
